A Minor Dwelling is proper, self-contained home, with:
- a full kitchen (with cooking facilities & drinking water)
- bathroom (connected to water and wastewater)
- laundry (connected to water and wastewater)
- decks, front, back and side yards
and anyone can “live” there (family / friends, tenants, visitors)
Adding a Minor Dwelling is a Restricted Discretionary Activity (in the appropriate Rural Zone)
= requires Resource Consent from Council
Some of Council's criteria:
· Overall land size = 1 hectare +
· Secondary to the existing Primary Dwelling = smaller in size (attached or detached)
· Close to Primary Dwelling (within 50 metres)
· Share driveway access with Primary Dwelling
· Maximum Minor Dwelling size = 65 square metres (excluding garage and decks)
· Have a front yard (≥ 10 metres), side and rear yards (≥ 12 metres each)
· ≥ 20 metres from permanent & intermittent streams
· Parking area (or Garage)
· Drinking water = rainwater tank (shared or owned)
· Wastewater infrastructure (preferably shared)
NB Minor Dwellings are NOT able to be subdivided off from the main property
(Subdivision of the minor dwelling is a Prohibited Activity. Council won’t process your application)
